RadarRecorder – Naviation AB

Naviation RadarRecorder is a platform facilitating the review or playback of the screen of a separate computer system, for instance a radar situation display in an Air Traffic Control. That was the igniting spark of the project, hence the name.

When investigating accidents or incidents it is useful to review what data was available to the Air Traffic Controller at the time. This process is sometimes referred to as Legal Recording as such recording is sometimes required through various regulations.

Over time the project has gotten some spin-offs in the form of a few other real-world applications where the technology is closely related and many aspects of the platform reusable. Read below about the SpyGuy, CloneBoy and BigBrother recorder products.

Our flagship recorder

The Naviation premium RadarRecorder is assembled here in Sweden. It is built for non-stop H24 operations in tough temperature conditions.

As a radar (or other screen-) recorder

In many use cases it is enough to have a snapshot of a screen sampled at a given interval (for instance every 3 seconds). The position symbols rendered from radar data normally update at a 3-5 second interval, so if your goal is to be able to follow up on aircrafts’ historic and relative positions, capturing a video feed with 25 frames per second could seem a bit overkill.

For these use cases we developed the SpyGuy.

At a significantly reduced cost you still get access to the historic state of every position symbol on the radar situation display. It ships with the same encryption and the same web interface as the premium RadarRecorder.

As a spy device

Being much smaller than the original RadarRecorder, yet completely silent and without any moving parts (just like the real deal), it can be easily hooked onto the video cable running between any computer and accompanying monitor, without anybody noticing it.

There is no way to detect it’s presence through software on the machine that is being recorded (or spied on, if we’re to be honest). We’re not telling you that spying on your employees, co-workers or loved ones is a good deed, we’re simply admitting that the technology is well suited for the task.

Connect to WIFI for discreet and continous retrieval of material, or leave isolated if you plan to physically retrieve the device later.

Every premium RadarRecorder ships with a complimentary SpyGuy intended as a backup companion. The traditional setup for legal recording in radar environments is two redundant (and equally pricy) devices. We suggest running the premium machine as a primary, and a little SpyGuy to cover for it in case of temporary malfunction or during a (God forbid) off-site repair.

Publish contents of a screen

The CloneBoy product was initially developed for a use-case where one needs to clone and publish the screen of a computer to a remote location (for serious monitoring purposes or for sharing purposes on a nice-to-have/convenience basis).

Within an airport or Air Traffic Control setting segmentation of systems and computers on a network is a big deal. For example sharing the real-time meteorological information screen in the Air Traffic Control tower with the pilots’ briefing room would be beneficial, but actually connecting the computer from the tower (or the server behind it) to that room opens up a physical vulnerability for intrusion. In that and many other cases it is often not appropriate (and sometimes not permissible) to build network access that way.

The CloneBoy will clone the video signal going from the computer (in our example the meteorological computer) to that computer’s screen, and without any type of data access to that system it can then upload the screen contents to a site of your choice (for example the pilots’ briefing room).

The CloneBoy can in that way (and often should) reside on a different network, completely isolated from the system that it is “spying” on, the risk of intrusion against the source system is therefore zero.

Publish other type of video feed

With the exact same technology just described, it is a minor adjustment to replace the video feed from a computer with a video feed from a camera.

Do you want to publish the view from a web camera or other type of usb camera onto a website (public or private)? No problem!

As a spin-off from a platform that was designed to record audio together with video for the sake of legal follow-up and tracability, the BigBrother could act as your very own time machine.

For all those times when you just wish you could playback or prove what was said or agreed upon during a meeting. The BigBrother device implements most of the features mentioned above and combines video with multiple audio sources.

Depending on how you opt to use this device, and depending on whether or not you announce it’s presence, it would perhaps not fall into the category of “legal recording”. Possibly quite the contrary, so take care how you use it.
